It's hot and I love it

It's mid-June and for the past week NOLA has been under a heat advisory, temps reaching 93°F with a heat index of 105°F. For most people, all that means is sweating while walking between two well air conditioned locations. But for me it means it's time to start training. Most people would not even consider training outside in this weather. But I love it and am looking forward to sweating so much I look liked jumped in a swimming pool.

The first of two halfs I'm registered for in October 19wks away (on 10/10/10). The Louisiana half should be fun. The course is in shady, historic Mandeville, an hour north of NOLA and the entry fee was $40. How could I pass it up?! But now, I need to get my but into gear and start running regularly.

Since I am semi-injured, I decided to use Jeff Galloway's plan. Not too many miles. And I start off slow this week to ease back into to my schedule.  Here's my plan for the week.

I'm very excited (or at least I'm trying to make myself be) to start running again.  I enjoyed my training last year so much. I can't wait to be running with a purpose again.

What's on tap for your week? How do you feel about running in the heat/humidity?

I give you a ton of credit for running in the summer in Louisiana. I also think you might be slightly insane. I have a hard enough time forcing myself to walk the dog during the summmer up here in PA! Then, again, you probably think I'm nuts to bundle up and run outdoors here in December. To each her own!! Good luck with your training! :)

I like your training plan. I keep looking at different plans for my upcoming (first) half (in November) and a lot of them are pretty complicated. Living in Texas, we get the same lovely heat and humidity that you do - and it's been a challenge to run in it, but I just try and take it slow and steady and KNOW that I will be sweating like crazy five minutes into it. It's what we do, living in the south! :)

Congrats! I don't particulary like training in the heat but I will do it. Right now I like running before the sun comes up to make it a bit easier but every now and then I try to go out there in the heat of the day and really try to get used to it :D

I live South Carolina, where it's also really hot. Today it got up to 96 with a heat index of over 100. I can't run right now due to anemia... if I could run, I wouldn't run in this heat, but I will run when it's in the upper 80s, low 90s. I don't run as far and I take it slower- I might also do run/walk intervals, depending on how hot it is, but I don't just sit inside either.

I think it's all about what you're used to. I started running (like, STARTED, the very beginning) in the summer of 06. I think since I started in the summer, that's what makes it not-so-bad.

That looks like a really good training plan to use too :).

I am a MN gal...I cannot handle the heat and humidity at all! I can't imagine running in Louisiana.

Good luck with your training....it sounds like a nice race.

I do not like running in heat and humidity at all. Here in southeastern Arkansas, the heat/humidity is quite comparable to those days when I lived in Ruston, La. What is the 2nd half marathon that you are training for?

Phew - running in the humidity is not for me. I sweat a lot when it is 50 degrees out, let alone 90. LOL!

I am tapering for the next two weeks. I have 40 miles this week and then June 27th is my marathon.

Hate training in the heat and humidity! You are tough and have a great attitude.

Looks like a great plan!! I don't know how you can run in that muckety-muck called humidity...it's been a long time since I lived in IA or AL and had to endure that ... but back then I was much younger and didn't wilt in heat like I do now. Good luck with all!!!

I love summer training too. I like the really early morning long runs where you're just drenched but feel so good about it!
